That rotten-egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. The human nose detects it at extremely low concentrations — well below the point at which it would be considered anything more than a nuisance — which is why water can smell strongly of sulfur while every test number looks unremarkable.
Before buying any equipment, run this test: does the smell come from the hot tap only, or from both hot and cold? Hot-only almost always means the odour is being generated inside your water heater, and the fix is at the heater, not on the supply line. If both hot and cold smell, at every tap in the house, the hydrogen sulfide is coming in with the water and needs treating at the point of entry.
One more distinction worth making: if only one tap smells, the problem is that fixture or that branch of plumbing, not your water supply. Whole-house treatment will not change it.
What sulfur odor treatment actually means
Hydrogen sulfide in groundwater comes from a mix of natural sources — sulfur-bearing minerals in the formation, decaying organic matter, and sulfate-reducing bacteria that convert sulfate into sulfide in low-oxygen conditions. It is a normal characteristic of some aquifers, not a sign that something has failed.
The water-heater version of the problem is a specific and well-documented chemical reaction. Most tank water heaters contain a sacrificial anode rod, commonly magnesium, that protects the tank from corrosion. In water containing sulfate and the right bacteria, that anode can drive the production of hydrogen sulfide inside the tank. The result is water that smells strongly of sulfur from the hot tap while the cold runs clean.
Hydrogen sulfide is also corrosive and it tarnishes silver and copper. Beyond the smell, that is the practical argument for dealing with it rather than living with it.
It very often occurs alongside iron and iron bacteria, because the same low-oxygen conditions favour both. A treatment plan that addresses only one of them frequently disappoints.

What causes it
Hydrogen sulfide in the aquifer
Some groundwater simply carries dissolved hydrogen sulfide from sulfur-bearing geology. It is naturally occurring, and on a private well it arrives at the house untreated.
Sulfate-reducing bacteria
In low-oxygen conditions these naturally occurring bacteria convert sulfate into sulfide. They can live in the well, in the plumbing, or inside a water heater, and where they are living determines where the treatment goes.
Water heater anode reaction
A magnesium sacrificial anode in the presence of sulfate and the right bacteria can generate hydrogen sulfide inside the tank. This is the classic hot-water-only sulfur smell, and no amount of whole-house treatment will fix it because the odour is being created downstream of the treatment.
Stagnation
Water sitting in a seldom-used branch, a long dead-leg run, a guest bathroom or a vacation home gives bacteria time to work. Odour that is strong on the first draw and clears after running is characteristic of this.
Decaying organic matter near the source
Organic material in or near the well, or in a shallow formation, can contribute to sulfide production. This is one of the reasons wellhead condition matters.
Drain or fixture odour mistaken for water odour
Sometimes the smell is coming from a P-trap, an overflow or a biofilm in a drain rather than from the water at all. Filling a glass and taking it to another room is a quick way to separate the two, and it saves people from buying equipment they do not need.
How we inspect and diagnose it
- Run the hot-versus-cold test at multiple fixtures. This single observation eliminates more wrong answers than any laboratory result.
- Check whether the smell is at every tap or only one, and whether it clears after the tap has run for a minute or two.
- Fill a glass, walk it to another room and smell it there — that separates water odour from drain odour.
- Note whether the odour is worst after a period of non-use, which points at stagnation or biological activity.
- Test for iron and manganese, because hydrogen sulfide so often occurs with them and treating one without the other rarely satisfies.
- Measure pH, since the effectiveness of several oxidation approaches to sulfide is strongly pH-dependent.
- On municipal water, establish whether neighbours have the same complaint — if they do, it is a utility matter rather than a household equipment one.

Repair or replace?
Returning odour on a system that used to work is usually an exhausted media bed, a lost air pocket on an air-injection unit, or a backwash cycle that has stopped running. All three are repairs.
For chemical oxidation systems, odour breakthrough is often a dosing or contact-time issue rather than a failed component, and it is adjusted rather than replaced.
For a water-heater-generated odour, the remedies are at the heater — changing the anode type, or having the tank flushed and sanitised. That is a plumbing or water-heater service call, and we will say so rather than substituting equipment we sell.
Redesign is appropriate when the original system was sized for a lower sulfide concentration than the water actually carries, when pH was never corrected, or when iron and bacteria were never accounted for in the original design.
Odour that keeps coming back despite correctly working equipment usually means there is a biological reservoir somewhere in the system that needs sanitising rather than more filtration.
Equipment and materials involved
Air-injection oxidising filter
The same class of system used for iron. An air pocket in the tank oxidises hydrogen sulfide and the media bed captures the result. Effective across a useful range of concentrations and popular because it uses no chemicals.
Catalytic carbon
Can handle low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and is often used as a polishing stage. It has a finite capacity, so it is a good fit for light odour and a poor fit for heavy sulfide loads.
Chemical oxidation with contact tank and filtration
Injecting an oxidant ahead of a contact tank and filter handles higher concentrations and deals with the bacterial component at the same time. More capable, more maintenance, appropriate where the water requires it.
Aeration systems
Physically strip dissolved gas out of the water and vent it. Effective on sulfide, though they require space, venting and usually a repressurisation pump.
Well and system sanitisation
Where sulfate-reducing bacteria are established, sanitising the well and plumbing is often part of the solution rather than an alternative to equipment.
Water heater remedies
For heater-generated odour, changing the sacrificial anode material and flushing and sanitising the tank are the recognised approaches. This is heater work, not water treatment, and we will refer it as such.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this work, and we would be making them up if we did — the same service can differ substantially between two houses on the same street depending on the water and the plumbing. What we can be specific about is what moves the number:
- Where the odour is being generated — a water-heater fix and a whole-house treatment system are not remotely comparable in scope
- The hydrogen sulfide concentration, which determines whether a carbon polish, an air-injection filter or a chemical oxidation system is appropriate
- Whether iron, manganese or iron bacteria are present alongside the sulfide
- Whether pH adjustment is needed for the chosen oxidation process to work reliably
- Required flow rate, which sets vessel size and therefore cost
- Whether well and plumbing sanitisation is part of the plan
- Availability of drain, power and physical space at the installation point
- Ongoing media replacement, or ongoing oxidant supply for chemical systems

How long it takes
- Diagnosis can usually be completed on the first visit, since the key observations are made at the taps.
- An air-injection or media-based system is typically installed in a single visit where the drain, outlet and space are available.
- Chemical injection systems take longer to install and need a period of adjustment to get dosing right for your water.
- Where sanitisation is part of the plan, the system has to be flushed thoroughly afterwards before the water is used normally.
- Odour verification is best done over several days rather than immediately, because the most telling test is what the water smells like on the first draw of the morning.
Keeping it working
- Confirm the backwash cycle is running and draining on any media-based system.
- On air-injection systems, verify the air pocket is present and being renewed — losing it silently disables the oxidation step.
- Replace media at the end of its working life; catalytic carbon in particular loses capacity gradually and gives no mechanical warning.
- Keep chemical feed systems supplied and check the dosing rate periodically.
- Run seldom-used fixtures regularly, particularly in seasonal or vacation homes, so water is not sitting in dead legs for months.
- Re-sanitise if odour returns after a period away, which usually indicates bacterial regrowth rather than equipment failure.
Most of the failures we are called out to were preventable. Scheduled maintenance and filter replacement is the cheapest part of owning any of this equipment.
Limitations and realistic outcomes
- Hydrogen sulfide treatment is concentration-specific. A system chosen for a light odour will not hold a heavy one, and that is a design limit rather than an installation fault.
- Whole-house treatment cannot fix odour that is generated inside the water heater. We will not sell a system for a problem it cannot solve.
- Where sulfate-reducing bacteria are established, odour can recur and periodic sanitisation is generally part of the ongoing plan rather than a one-time cure.
- Some oxidation methods are pH-sensitive and will underperform outside their effective range, which is why pH is measured before selecting one.
- Carbon-only approaches have limited capacity for sulfide and are not a good match for strong or persistent odour.
- We do not make health claims about hydrogen sulfide in drinking water. At the concentrations that produce a household odour complaint it is treated as an aesthetic and nuisance problem, and questions beyond that belong with your physician or the health department.

Port Charlotte considerations
Most Port Charlotte homes are on Charlotte County's treated municipal supply, and treated water is far less likely to carry hydrogen sulfide into the house than raw well water is. That makes the water heater the more probable explanation for a Port Charlotte sulfur complaint, and it makes the hot-versus-cold test even more valuable here as the first step.
Port Charlotte also has a high proportion of seasonal and part-time residences. A house that has sat closed through the summer with water standing in the plumbing and the water heater can develop a strong sulfur smell that clears substantially once everything has been thoroughly flushed.
