A home water test measures what is in the water arriving at your property so that any equipment recommendation is based on a reading rather than on a symptom. We test on site for hardness, iron, manganese, pH, total dissolved solids and chlorine residual, and we assess odour directly at the fixtures. Anything health-based — bacteria, nitrate, lead — goes to a certified laboratory, because a field kit cannot answer those honestly.
Why a test comes before a recommendation
Hard water, iron and hydrogen sulfide all present as “my water is bad.” They also all have distinct fixes that do nothing for each other. A softener will not touch a sulfur smell. A carbon filter will not remove hardness. An iron filter chosen for the wrong form of iron will not stop the staining. And an undersized system will disappoint on day one regardless of how well it is installed.
A test also frequently rules things out, which saves money. A rotten-egg smell in hot water only means the odour is being generated inside your water heater — no whole-house system could ever fix that, and being told so is more useful than being sold one.

What we measure on site
Hardness (grains per gallon)
The dissolved calcium and magnesium that cause scale and stop soap lathering. This is the number that sizes a softener, and it is the single most useful reading in the whole panel.
Total iron, and its form
Concentration, plus the clear-versus-oxidised observation that distinguishes dissolved iron from suspended rust. Those two need different equipment, so the observation matters as much as the number.
Manganese
Often travels with iron but stains black rather than orange, and has a much lower staining threshold. Worth measuring separately.
pH
Determines whether some oxidation-based treatments will work at all, and flags water aggressive enough to be hard on plumbing.
Total dissolved solids
A general measure of dissolved mineral content. Useful for drinking-water decisions and for judging whether an existing reverse osmosis membrane is still performing.
Chlorine residual (on municipal supplies)
Determines which carbon media is appropriate, and matters a great deal if a reverse osmosis membrane is going to be installed downstream.
Odour assessment
Hot versus cold, one tap versus all taps, first draw versus after running. Not a laboratory measurement, but the most diagnostic part of the visit for any smell complaint.
Pressure and flow
Every treatment stage consumes some pressure. Measuring what you have prevents specifying a system that makes the shower worse.
What has to go to a certified laboratory
Bacteriological parameters (total coliform, E. coli), nitrate, lead and similar health-based tests cannot be answered credibly with a field kit. They need a properly collected and preserved sample analysed by a certified laboratory, and we will always say so rather than blur the line.

If you are on a public supply, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report — every community water system in the country is required to — and it is worth reading before assuming anything about your supply.
How to read your results
The hardness scale most commonly used in the trade runs like this:
One grain per gallon is roughly 17.1 milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate, so a lab report quoting mg/L can be converted by dividing by 17.1. Hardness is an aesthetic and nuisance characteristic rather than a health-based standard — there is no legal limit for it.
For iron and manganese, the reference points are the US EPA's secondary standards: 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Those are guidelines for staining, taste and colour, not health limits, and visible staining tends to begin at or around them.

How long does a home water test take?
The field portion is typically done during the visit, because hardness, iron, pH, dissolved solids and chlorine can all be measured on site. Anything sent to a certified laboratory — bacteria, nitrate, lead — takes longer, and the turnaround depends on the lab rather than on us.
Can you test for bacteria or lead?
Not with a field kit, and we will not pretend otherwise. Bacteriological, nitrate and lead testing requires a properly collected, preserved sample analysed by a certified laboratory. We will tell you what to collect and where it needs to go, and we design around the lab result rather than ahead of it.
I'm on city water — is testing still worth it?
Often yes, for a different reason. Your utility tests the water it produces, and publishes those results annually in its Consumer Confidence Report. What that report cannot tell you is what the water is like after travelling through the distribution system and your own plumbing, or how hard it is at your specific tap — and hardness is what determines softener sizing.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
Not much. It helps if we can reach an outside spigot and an untreated cold tap indoors, and it helps to know roughly when the complaint appears — hot water only, first thing in the morning, after heavy rain. Those observations are often more diagnostic than the numbers.
Will you try to sell me a system at the end?
You get the readings and what they mean, including when the honest answer is that nothing needs installing. Plenty of homes test in a range where a softener is genuinely optional, and saying so is part of doing the job properly.
