The short answer

Whole-house filtration — sometimes called point-of-entry treatment — installs on the main water line before it branches out to the rest of the house. Every fixture, every appliance and every hose bib downstream gets filtered water, which is the difference between it and an under-sink or pitcher filter that only treats one tap.

What it actually removes depends entirely on the media inside. A sediment cartridge catches sand and particulate. Activated carbon reduces chlorine and the taste and odour that come with it. Neither of those removes hardness, which is the single most common misunderstanding we run into.

What whole-house filtration actually means

Filtration and softening solve different problems and are frequently confused because both are 'water treatment' boxes in the garage. A softener uses ion exchange to remove dissolved calcium and magnesium. A filter physically or chemically traps something as the water passes through it. If your complaint is scale and soap, you need softening. If it is taste, smell or grit, you need filtration. Plenty of homes need both.

Filters come in two broad configurations. Cartridge systems use a replaceable element in a housing — simple, no drain required, and you swap the cartridge on a schedule. Backwashing systems use a media bed in a tank with a control valve that periodically flushes the bed to the drain, which means more capacity and less frequent servicing but requires a drain connection.

Micron rating matters on the sediment side: a lower micron number catches finer particles but clogs faster and costs more pressure. Sizing a sediment stage is a trade-off between clarity and flow, not simply 'the finest available'.

What causes it

  • Disinfectant residual on municipal water

    Public water systems are required to maintain a disinfectant residual through the distribution network. That residual does its job all the way to your tap, which also means you taste and smell it. It is doing what it is supposed to do — carbon filtration simply removes it at the point where it is no longer needed.

  • Sediment from the distribution system

    Main breaks, hydrant flushing and normal pressure changes can stir up settled particulate in a distribution main. It reaches homes in slugs rather than continuously, which is why grit often appears suddenly and then clears.

  • Sediment from a private well

    Wells can carry fine sand, silt or turbidity from the formation, especially after heavy pumping or during the wet season. A well without any sediment stage sends all of that into the house plumbing.

  • Organic matter and earthy taste

    Surface-influenced and shallow sources can carry naturally occurring organic compounds that produce an earthy or musty taste even when the water meets every applicable standard. Carbon is generally the right tool for those aesthetic complaints.

  • Ageing household plumbing

    Sometimes the water arriving at the house is fine and the problem starts inside it — corroded galvanised pipe, a failing water heater, or a long dead-leg run that stagnates. Diagnosing that first avoids installing a filter that cannot fix the actual cause.

  • Confirm whether the complaint is at every tap or only at one. A single-tap problem is almost never solved by a point-of-entry filter.
  • Confirm whether it is hot water only, cold only, or both — hot-only points at the water heater, not the supply.

Repair or replace?

Cartridge systems are rarely 'repaired' — you replace the element, and occasionally the housing O-ring or the housing itself if it has been over-tightened or degraded.

Backwashing systems can usually be repaired: control valves have rebuild kits, and a bad drain-line flow control or a stuck piston is a serviceable fault.

Media replacement is a maintenance item, not a repair. Carbon has a finite adsorption capacity; once it is exhausted, taste and odour come back and no amount of backwashing restores it.

Replacing the whole system usually only makes sense when the vessel itself is compromised, when the original sizing was wrong for the house, or when the treatment goal has changed — for example, a home that has since gone on a well and now needs oxidation ahead of the filter.

  • Granular activated carbon (GAC)

  • Catalytic carbon

    A modified carbon used where chloramine is the disinfectant rather than free chlorine, and sometimes for low-level hydrogen sulfide. Chloramine needs longer contact time than free chlorine, which affects vessel sizing.

  • Backwashing control valve

    Periodically reverses flow through the media bed to lift out trapped particulate and re-stratify the media. Requires a drain connection and adds to the water the system uses.

  • Bypass and service valves

    Lets the filter be isolated for cartridge changes without shutting the house down, and gives a clean point to sample untreated water for comparison.

What affects the cost

We do not publish prices for this work, and we would be making them up if we did — the same service can differ substantially between two houses on the same street depending on the water and the plumbing. What we can be specific about is what moves the number:

  • Whether a cartridge system or a backwashing media system is appropriate for your flow rate and service preferences
  • The number of treatment stages the diagnosis calls for — sediment only, sediment plus carbon, or additional stages ahead of a softener
  • Media type, since catalytic carbon costs more than standard granular activated carbon
  • Vessel size, which is driven by your home's peak simultaneous flow rather than by square footage
  • Whether a drain connection and an electrical outlet already exist at the installation point
  • Plumbing complexity at the point of entry, including whether the main is accessible and whether existing valves are serviceable

  • Media beds need a period of backwashing and settling before the system is fully in service; carbon in particular is flushed until the discharge runs clear of fines.
  • If filtration is being installed as part of a full train with a softener or an iron filter, expect a longer single visit rather than several short ones.

Keeping it working

  • Replace sediment cartridges on a schedule based on how fast they load, not on a generic interval — check the first few changes to learn your home's real rate.
  • Track carbon media life. Carbon does not signal exhaustion mechanically; the taste and odour simply return.
  • Watch pressure drop across the system. A growing difference between inlet and outlet pressure is the earliest reliable sign a filter is loading up.
  • Sanitise housings when changing cartridges, since a wet housing left open is a good environment for biofilm.
  • Confirm backwash cycles are actually running and draining freely on media systems.

Most of the failures we are called out to were preventable. Scheduled maintenance and filter replacement is the cheapest part of owning any of this equipment.

Limitations and realistic outcomes

  • Carbon filtration reduces chlorine, taste and odour. It does not soften water, and it does not remove dissolved minerals.
  • A sediment filter is rated for a particle size. Anything dissolved passes straight through it regardless of how fine the micron rating is.
  • Standard whole-house filtration is not a substitute for disinfection and should not be described as making water microbiologically safe. Homes with a confirmed bacteriological problem need that addressed directly, through the well or utility, not assumed away by a carbon filter.
  • Point-of-entry systems cannot fix a problem that starts inside the house — a failing water heater or corroded interior piping will keep producing the same complaint downstream of any filter.
